Crama Domneasca is, without doubt, one of the most representative and successful restaurant projects in Bucharest. First of all it valorizes the old peasant and bourgeois cuisine in a historical site of prime importance for Bucharest s chronicles: Curtea Veche – princely residence and the nucleus of Walachia capital in the 16th century.
The restaurant grounds its princely title and brings about a grandiose setting specific to the palace of a ruler of Walachia. It decked its interior so as to reproduce the medieval atmosphere, dressed up its staff in velvet gowns, used the pickles as decorations and put the meat in spikes and swords.
A dinner at Crama Domneasca has amazing effects on the foreign tourists fond of gastronomic tourism with local perfume. And when you also have some pages of legend in the entertainment arsenal of the evening, the eastern guests will be more than impressed. Judging by the feasts from Crama Domneasca, the boyars were revellers by trade with a full leisure life.
The history of the Crama Domneasca restaurant begins in 1971, when a place which honours the Romanian food and wine operates in the basement from Selari street. Everything was good and tasty until the middle of the 90s, when a heavy lock was put and the place fell into oblivion. It wasn t until lately that the place was rehabilitated by the new owners who renovated the pub more than a year.
There was a lot of work to be done at the buildings consolidation and the places repartitioning. The new scheme of the Crama Domneasca restaurant contains 3 lounges (70 and 100 seats downstairs + 120 seats at the basement for non-smokers) for about 300 guests. The large windows are removed during the summer and thus the lounge becomes a covered terrace which leads to the landscape of the ruins of Curtea Veche. The cast iron spears, the chimney, the pickles of the house and the chandeliers are never-failing from the setting.
The location is the kind of show-restaurant where the foods presentation is made with artifices (swords, spikes, clay plates, wooden spoons and trays). It shouldnt be avoided by those fond of the old Romanian boyar atmosphere or by those who want a dinner in a place with a precious past. English, German or Italian is spoken for the overseas guests.
Let s get to work and see what Crama Domneasca provides us in order to satisfy our appetite. Tepes is very popular when it comes to the gastronomic public. From the boyar menu we have chosen “Meniul lui Tepes” (Tepes menu), a “Tochitura a Domnitei” (toasted pieces of pork with polenta, eggs and razed cheese), preceded by “Gustare boiereasca” (Boyar snack), “Gustare rece Voievodala” (Princely cold snack). The dishes are based on raw materials made “in the barnyard”, including genuine home-made pickles, home-made bread of rye flour, fresh dishes made without preservative substances. You can also find venison. The pheasant, the sucking pig or any genuine Romanian snacks are cooked if you inform the staff a day before about the list of delicacies that you want for the dinner party.
Century-old recipes which almost nobody takes time to cook at home are made here. We mention here the Danube stock, the rooster stock, the home-made sausages on ember, the spicy cheese, the fold chunk, the pot with meat kept in grease, the cheese and raisins pie or even the cakes with natural cream and nut padding. The menu of the day contains three types of food with prices ranging between 14 and 18 lei. The groups can opt for a special musical programme or degustations. The rulers of old were always happy to have important guests. For a feast to your heart s content, whether it is a reception, a private party or a corporate event, there are 5 menus which range between 35 and 85 euro / per person.
The native cuisine goes hand in hand with the chords of the folk music, fiddler music or romances. From Tuesday to Sunday (after 7 p.m.) the fiddlers of the princely palace, Crama Domneasca band perform a rich programme. The female soloist sings like in the old days, without a microphone.
The restaurant s name is not related to vineyard, wine and wine storage for the mere asking. A collection of over 200 native wine assortments wait for their cupbearer. Each producer has its allocated place and the liquors can be tasted within some degustation sessions which the restaurant organizes at demand.
